Kevin E. Woods, M.D., M.P.H.

Kevin E. Woods, M.D., M.P.H. founded and leads, Therapeutic GI, a private gastroenterology and interventional endoscopy practice in Metropolitan Atlanta. Dr. Woods is a second-generation physician, clinical researcher and inventor. Dr. Woods earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at Morehouse College and his Doctor of Medicine degree at Meharry Medical College. His extensive postgraduate training was focused on clinical care, clinical research, clinical effectiveness and medical device development disciplines.

 

Dr. Woods completed The Osler Internal Medicine Residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, a Clinical and Research Fellowship in Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Advanced Endoscopy and Master of Public Health degree at Harvard Medical School’s Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and The Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, respectively.  While in the laboratory and school of public health, he also submitted novel patents regarding improvements in the clinical effectiveness of endoscopy and contributed to the clinical application, teaching and research related to advanced endoscopic imaging systems.

 

Dr. Woods has an established track record of Gastroenterology & Endoscopy Service Line Development and GI Program Development.  In addition to his clinical achievements, he served as Director of Advanced Endoscopic Imaging, Informatics and Innovation and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and The Emory Clinic.  During his tenure at Emory, he developed the first Optical Endomicroscopy and Bariatric Endoscopy Program in the State of Georgia. 


His published clinical research is included in widely read journals including Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Surgical Endoscopy, and World Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, among others. He has been an invited lecturer and presented his research at national and international conferences. He is on the editorial board of the journal Bariatric Surgical Practice and Patient Care and is a scientific journal manuscript reviewer for Gastroenterology, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (GIE), Surgical Endoscopy, BMC Gastroenterology, Endoscopy International Open Access and Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He continues to lecture widely on the applications of new clinical technologies and raise awareness of the impact of esophageal cancer, pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer and other digestive disorders in our communities.


In 2010, he was named One of the Best Residents and Fellows at Harvard Medical School. In 2014, he received the Mentor in Medicine Award from Emory School of Medicine. In 2016, the Atlanta Medical Association recognized him as Young Physician of the Year and he was recognized by the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s Top 40 under 40. In 2018, the Thomas J. Blocker Society awarded him the Presidential Award in recognition of support for the Health Careers Program at Morehouse College and he became a member of the 2018 Class of Leadership Atlanta.  In February 2019, Dr. Woods was honored with a State of Georgia Proclamation as an Outstanding Georgia Citizen by the Secretary of State, Lt. Governor and Governor of Georgia and has been nominated by his fellow physician colleagues as an Atlanta Top Doctor by both Castle Connolly and Atlanta Magazine in 2022, 2023 and 2024.


When he is not working,  Dr. Woods enjoys golf, sporting clays, all things related to technology and spending time with his wife and their three children.
